Find guidance on how to test links for travellers who use assistive technology.

Keyboard testing

  1. Use the ‘Tab’ key to move focus to the link.
  2. Make sure that the link receives focus and the expected focus state is presented.
  3. Press ‘Enter’ to activate the link.
  4. Verify that result is what is expected.

Screen reader checks

NVDA on Chrome

  1. Navigate to the link to test. This can be done in numerous ways (for example):
    • Open the elements list by pressing the NVDA key + F7 and using the arrow keys if the ‘Links’ menu is not highlighted.
    • Press the letter K to move through the links.
  2. Check that the link’s name and role are announced.
  3. If the link navigates to a new window then ensure that this is announced to assistive technology. For example, “View airline fees, Link, opens in new window”.
  4. Press ENTER to follow the link.
  5. Check that the result is what’s expected (redirected to a new page, or location, if an in-page link).

VoiceOver on Safari

  1. Navigate to the link to test. This can be done in numerous ways, such as:
    • Open the rotor by pressing CTRL + OPT + U and use the arrow keys to move to the ‘Links’ menu.
    • Press CTRL + OPT + CMD + L to move to the link.
  2. Check that the link’s name and role are announced.
  3. If the link navigates to a new window then ensure that this is announced to assistive technology. For example, “View airline fees, Link, opens in new window”.
  4. Press CTRL + OPT + SPACE to follow the link.
  5. Check that the result is what’s expected (redirected to a new page, or location, if an in-page link).

VoiceOver on iOS

  1. Swipe left or right to navigate to the link.
  2. Check that the link’s name and role are announced.
  3. If the link navigates to a new window then ensure that this is announced to assistive technology. For example, “View airlines fees, Link, opens in a new window”.
  4. Double-tap anywhere on the screen to follow the link.
  5. Check that the result is what’s expected (redirected to a new page, or location, if an in-page link).
