Accessibility testing
Find guidance on how to test links for travellers who use assistive technology.
Keyboard testing
- Use the ‘Tab’ key to move focus to the link.
- Make sure that the link receives focus and the expected focus state is presented.
- Press ‘Enter’ to activate the link.
- Verify that result is what is expected.
Screen reader checks
NVDA on Chrome
- Navigate to the link to test. This can be done in numerous ways (for example):
- Open the elements list by pressing the NVDA key + F7 and using the arrow keys if the ‘Links’ menu is not highlighted.
- Press the letter K to move through the links.
- Check that the link’s name and role are announced.
- If the link navigates to a new window then ensure that this is announced to assistive technology. For example, “View airline fees, Link, opens in new window”.
- Press ENTER to follow the link.
- Check that the result is what’s expected (redirected to a new page, or location, if an in-page link).
VoiceOver on Safari
- Navigate to the link to test. This can be done in numerous ways, such as:
- Open the rotor by pressing CTRL + OPT + U and use the arrow keys to move to the ‘Links’ menu.
- Press CTRL + OPT + CMD + L to move to the link.
- Check that the link’s name and role are announced.
- If the link navigates to a new window then ensure that this is announced to assistive technology. For example, “View airline fees, Link, opens in new window”.
- Press CTRL + OPT + SPACE to follow the link.
- Check that the result is what’s expected (redirected to a new page, or location, if an in-page link).
VoiceOver on iOS
- Swipe left or right to navigate to the link.
- Check that the link’s name and role are announced.
- If the link navigates to a new window then ensure that this is announced to assistive technology. For example, “View airlines fees, Link, opens in a new window”.
